Case study: Province of Zeeland

Freshwater management in a creek ridge infiltration system

A practical trial for sustainable freshwater management is being carried out in Noordgouwe. Commissioned by the Province of Zeeland, a system is being developed to harvest freshwater during wet periods through level controlled drainage and later infiltrate this water into a sandy creek ridge.

The challenge is familiar in areas where freshwater availability is under pressure. Water not only needs to be moved, but also kept manageable within a technical system of pumps, pipes, filters, measuring points and changing water conditions.

Hydroponic lettuce and recirculation

Water quality in a fully recirculating cultivation system

At a practical location for hydroponic lettuce, a fully recirculating water system was in use. The water was reused within a combination of crop cultivation and aquaculture, which meant that algae formation, fungal pressure and microbiological load required continuous attention.

The challenge is familiar to growers working with recirculation. The system must remain stable while water is reused as much as possible and is not unnecessarily burdened with chemicals. Especially in hydroponic cultivation, small disturbances can quickly affect root health, growth and operational reliability.

Water quality in a recirculating aquaculture system

At De Palingfabriek in Rohel, a recirculating aquaculture system is used for eel farming.

In this type of system, water is continuously reused, which means that water quality, microbiological pressure, deposits and system stability have a direct impact on operational reliability.

The challenge is familiar to aquaculture companies that want to become more sustainable while maintaining control over water quality. Especially at high stocking densities and with limited water exchange, the system must remain stable. Deposits, cloudy water, microbiological load and differences between basins can affect growth, health and maintenance.
